Guardino Jr. was forced to resign. She was elected to the post as Supervisor at the end of 2003, and was reelected in 2005, with more than 60% votes. The Supervisor is an ardent friend of Mondello who was also in the position as Republican Party State Chairman during the latter part of the 2000s. While the county GOP is weaker, the strength of the organization has dwindled dramatically from the level it was during the previous decades, as evident by the decline in control of the nearby Town of North Hempstead, under Democratic administration starting in 1989 and the county government itself from 2002 until the year 2009 –the Town of Hempstead is still an important GOP stronghold. Murray’s leadership was defined by a three-step decline of the credit rating of Hempstead during Murray’s last year as supervisor by Standard and Poor’s. The reason was the drawdown of reserves as well as the settlement of a complicated tuition arrangement to the Fashion Institute of Technology. This was followed by a downgrade one year before by S&P which indicates that Murray’s management resulted in four downgrades during her last two years on the job.
